BJP supporters told to "vote for Modi", don't find him on candidate list

BJP supporting voters who went to caste their vote in ongoing General Election 2019 in India were in for a big surprise. They were told, repeatedly, that it was upto them to see that Modi was voted back into power, that they held the key to ensuring the country's future path of success. The campaign run by the ruling majority party, Bharatiya Janata Party, put forth incumbent Prime Minister Narendra Damordas Modi as the political hero that will sustain the good run the nation has been having for the last 5 years. They say that the next largest player, Indian National Congress, will take it back to a pre-2014 status back upto when India got its Independence from the British—commonly referred to as the "60 years" that they did not nothing for the country.

The mood in the voter's camp seemed to look up with people going in droves, with the belief that they are indeed creating the nation's future with their single vote. This was clearly evident from the ambience near the country's many polling centres as people entered. But this wasn't the case when they were exiting. Most of them were aghast. All their responses pointed to one thing: they didn't find Modi on the candidates list. "BJP told us to "Vote for Modi but Modi wasn't even a candidate", said one disappointed voter.

Another voter told us, "I was looking for Modi on the candidate list but didn't spot his name. But I did see one person who was in election posters on the list. I didn't know what else to do and chose him because he was from Modi's party. Maybe he'll get the message across to Modi himself whoever he is." These were the sum of responses of BJP supporters exiting polling centres. Some had figured it out. They hunched that the non-Modi BJP candidate was just a Modi messenger. It was all balanced and well, till their next surprise came.

They were confused when they saw post-polling responses of people in Varanasi. They all were excited after actually voting for Modi. How they wondered? If they didn't get him, how did someone else? Then the rage ensued, "Why did Modi stand from there, and not from our constituency? That's what we were told: to vote for Modi. How can we even do that if he isn't a candidate in our constituency?". Pat came the reply of the realities of Parliamentary Elections, of course excusing the sanctity of people's representation by the candidate for the farce of people's direct selection of a Prime Minister. Debates ensued, fanfare ruled, voters got confused, and chaos remained as to where their promised candidate was standing, and how they were even supposed to vote for Modi, when he isn't even on the candidates list.

At the end of a voting day, the BJP supporting voters (except in Varanasi) were left anywhere but happy. What's left to see, regardless of who wins, is how they process this travesty of fake candidate promises. All this while, unlike the rest of the country, Varanasi's voters are proud Modi balloters while literally everyone else can't be despite being promised so.
